Podcasting

Although podcasting gets its name from the Apple iPod, you don't need an iPod to create a podcast, nor do you need one to consume a podcast.  Essentially, a podcast is nothing more than an mp3 audio file.  That said, the really interesting part of podcasts is not their production, but their syndication.  Syndication is the process of getting the podcast out for everyone to listen to.  Generally, some form of RSS is used for that.

Here are some good podcasting links:

  • podsafe audio - Be careful using music in your podcasts.  Copyright law is fairly restrictive in the area of music, so make sure your music is podsafe (permitted to be used in podcasts without violating copyright law)
  • podcasting legal guide - The Creative Commons site has a wonderful legal brief on podcasting and copyright law.  This is a must-read for all podcasters.
